- Rhodope Mountains
- The most impenetrable mountain range of the Balkan Peninsula (q.v.), densely wooded and rugged, whose few passes impede communications between the coastal plain of Thrace (q.v.) and the upper Hebros River valley. The theme of Strymon (qq.v.) was created partly to defend those passes.
